Sikkim is a home of natural biodiversity of flora and fauna and alluring natural beauty of mountains. Withholding the third highest mountain peak in the world, it gets thousands of tourist and travelers in a month from all over the world. It also hosts some of the beautiful treks of Himalayas like Sandakphu Trek, Goechala Trek and Kanchenjunga Base camp which are quite an attraction for trekker and mountain climbers.  

Sikkim share its border with Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and West Bengal and have extensive diversity of cultures which live in peace and harmony. This place is also known as the country of monasteries and Buddhist shrines.  

North Sikkim Backpacking trip helps you explore the white capped mountains of Sikkim and its beautiful valleys of flower. The trip starts from Gangtok and make its way to Northern valley of Lachen, Lachung and Yumthang Valley. The highlight of the trip is the Gurudongmar lake which resides at the height of 5430m ie. 17800 ft. The Lake is the one of the highest lakes in the World and in India. It is considered sacred by many communities like Buddhist, Hindus and Sikhs. 

Short Itinerary

Day 1: 

  • Pickup from Bagdogra Airport
  • Reach the Gangtok hotel and Check-in
  • Walk to Namgyal Institute of Tibetology to explore the Tibetan culture.
  • Enjoy the Cable car ride high above the Gangtok city.
  • Explore the M G Marg while street shopping.
  • Have hot delicious dinner in cold weather
  • Overnight Stay in Hotel

Day 2: 

  • Wake up and have breakfast
  • Excursion trip to the outskirts of Gangtok
  • Visit Famous Tsongmo Lake
  • Visit holy shrine of Baba Mandir
  • Click a selfie at Nathula Pass View Point
  • Return back to Gangtok
  • Have dinner and sleep at the hotel

Day 3:  

  • Wake up and get ready for travel
  • Travel from Gangtok to Lachen
  • Visit Singhik view point
  • Visit Naga fall on the way
  • Reach Lachen and check-in to the hotel
  • Have dinner and overnight say in Lachen

Day 4:

  • Getup early and have your breakfast in Thangu.
  • Start your journey to reach Gurudongmar Lake, One of the highest Lake in Himalayas.
  • Start your journey to Lachung
  • Arrive at Lachung and check – in hotel
  • Have dinner and stay in Lachung for the night

Day 5:

  • Have breakfast and start your journey ahead to Yumthang valley.
  • Reach Yumthang Valley – “Valley of Flowers”.
  • Return back to Lachung, have lunch
  • Start your backward journey to Gangtok.
  • Arrive Gangtok and check in to the hotel.

Day 6:  

  • Have breakfast in the morning.
  • Travel to Bagdogra Airport from Gangtok
  • Say adieus to Sikkim and board your return flight.

Detail Itinerary

1

Day 1: Arriving at Bagdogra Airport

Reach Bagdogra airport, Our Tour Leader will pick you up from the airport and then you can make your travel to Gangtok. Once you arrive at Gangtok, you will be greeted with cold breeze of Himalaya So, be sure to carry your thermals or jacket as your step out of the airport. Our tour leader will welcome you at the airport and take you to your hotel where you can complete the check-in formalities and fresh up.

There are multiple things to do on the first day but as you need to acclimatize to the mountain weather you should take it slow. Walk to the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. It is a Tibet museum in gangtok holding multiple history and artifacts of Tibetan culture. 

You can also enjoy the cable car or take a walk while street shopping through the M G Marg of Gangtok. Please be sure that you do try the momos here as they could be another highlight to your taste buds.   Have hot dinner at night and sleep for another day in Sikkim.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Gangtok

In mountains the day starts bit early. Wakeup and have your breakfast at the hotel and continue your journey ahead. Today will be an excursion trip to Famous Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula Pass View Point. Tsongmo Lake is one of the most visited attraction in Gangtok. Its famous for its altitude of 3870m and the beautiful Brahminy Ducks and many other migratory birds which calls this lake as their home in Spring and Summer.   Baba Mandir or say Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir is another famous Shrine build in the honor of Indian army soldier Baba Harbhajan Singh also revered as the “Hero of Nathula”. Please note this Shrine is open only from 8.00 AM in the morning to 2.00PM in afternoon. 

The serpentine roads leading to the Nathula pass opens a view of majestic laden mountains and Indo China Border. This place is worth every penny spent or every hardship faced en route.   After completing all the destination, we will come back to Gangtok to spend the night with delicious dinner.

Day 3: Travel from Gangtok to Lachen

Today you are going to travel a long distance so do make sure to carry enough snacks and charge your mobile and camera so that you would not miss to click any beautiful view you see on the journey.   Wake up early and have your breakfast and get ready to travel to Lachen which is close to 120km from Gangtok. Lachen is another paradise to wanderlust travelers like us. Snowcapped peaks, wonderful alpine meadows are quite picturesque view of Himalayas. Also, Chungthang is yet another beautiful hamlet guarded by high mountains.

On the way we will also explore the Naga falls and Singhik view point. These places are beautiful to capture a selfie. From here we will continue our journey to Lachen, reach there and check in to the hotel.   Do not forget to try the salt tea here while getting amazed by the beautiful mountain view through the window of the café. Explore the surrounding and have your dinner at night.

Day 4: Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake to Lachung

Greet the morning sun and have your breakfast while welcoming another day of North Sikkim Backpacking. Today we are going to visit the famous Gurudongmar Lake which is close to 40km away from Lachen. The Lake is famous for its high altitude and spiritual nature.   The calmness of Gurudongmar lake cannot be experience elsewhere in the whole world. We will spend some time and board back our cab to make our way back through the Kanchenjunga National Park to Lachung.

Lachung is 45km away from Lachen and the way is yet another eye candy. The tributary of Teesta river melting from the glacier will guide you the way to Lachung.   We will reach Lachung bit late in the evening so you can check-in the hotel and relax for the day. If you have time, you can visit the Lachung monastery.

Day 5: Lachung to Yumthang Valley and back to Gangtok

Wake up early, have breakfast and get ready for the last destination of your North Sikkim Backpacking. Today we are going to visit Yumthang Valley and get submerge into the beautiful valley of flowers. 

Yumthang is 26km away from Lachung where the alpine tree line ends and beautiful multicolored meadows of flowers like Primula, Rhododendron and other alpine flowers emerges. We will spend some time here to get mesmerized by the beautiful colored valley and fresh water tributary of Teesta river. After spending some time here, we will head back to Lachung and have our lunch and continue our journey back to Gangtok.   After arriving at Gangtok we will check-in to the hotel and have dinner.

Day 6: Gangtok to Bagdogra | Say your adieus to Sikkim

Wake up and fresh up. Have breakfast and cherish the beautiful time you spent in North Sikkim while having a hot cup of coffee. Complete the check-out formalities and our tour leader will drop you back to the Bagdogra airport where you can say your adieus to Sikkim and make a promise to return for another vacation.

Safety,Risk and Advisory

We develop our itinerary without compromising anything regards to Safety. We are aware that you would have concern regarding travelling this post covid lockdown but we take several measures to make the trip safe for you. We strongly recommend all the travellers in the trip to gain a Covid-19 Test certification. Apart from that we also sanitize the vehicle and homestay/campsite thoroughly before using it. We have made the use of face mask mandatory at public places and travel destination. Although its difficult to trek with face mask on, we strongly monitor the protocol of social distancing.   • Please carry Xerox copy of Pan Card or Aadhar Card, as its same is required to permission from the Forest Department. 
  • Non – Indian nationals will have to pay additional cost of Rs. 1300/- toward forest permission. 
  • We strictly DO NOT ALLOW consumption of Alcohol, Beer, smoking or intoxicants on out trek. We request you to please co-operate with us to the make the experience more enjoyable. 
  • Requesting our participant to DO NOT EXPECT any kind of luxury on the trek. We host our treks in remote location and do our best to arrange the basic necessary facilities for our participant. The objective is to experience the local outdoor. 
  • We provide hot vegetarian food on our treks. If in case we can arrange Non-Veg, we would inform you on the trek. 
  • DO NOT wear tight pants; tight pants are not comfortable for treks as the leg motion is restricted. 
  • DO NOT carry valuable ornaments; it can cause unnecessary trouble if misplaced. (Nature Walkers do not take any responsibility of your ornaments). 
  • DO NOT wear black or dark cloths and perfume on the trek (as some insects get attracted to dark color and perfumes) 
  • Please put the little at its place, we request to not trash the trek or the accommodation facility. 
  • If in case of traffic delay, we request our participants to expect little delay in reaching the destination. 
  • 8 to 20 Members 
  • We get equal boys to girls ratio for most of our treks/trips 
  • We require a minimum of 8 participant to confirm the event 
  • If in case, we fail to obtain the required minimum number of participants. We would initiate full refund or transfer to another event for the same departure date. (Option of transfer shall be subject to payment/refund of balance amount if any) 

FAQs

Nature Walkers shall follow all the basic Covid Guidelines like Face Mask, Hand Sanitizer, Vehicle and Homestay Sanitization with Temperature Check. It is mandatory to carry Covid Vaccination Certificate if you have been vaccinated with both the doses on Trek. If you have Vaccinated only with one dose or have not got vaccinated,  then you would need RTPCR Negative Test Report to join this Trek. As It might be inconvience if the state government rule changes after your do your registration or after you begin your travel and it would be difficult to find covid test centers nearby to your travel destinations. The Spring is one of the best time to explore Himalayas and Southern Western Ghats. This is the time when flower blooms and animals come out of their winter sleep. Also, we have shared the itinerary in a form of a virtual trek/trip which would give you basic idea of the difficulty level of the trek/trip, which will help you in decision making.
